Backcountry Skiing

Lou's first book, long out of print. Collector's item if you can find one.

From author Lou Dawson:
Getting published on paper over the last decades has been an interesting journey. It’s resulted in a few successes and what I’m comfortable calling contributions to the sports of backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering.

On the other hand, my career in ink-paper publishing has been frustrating. Printed books are so expensive to produce it’s difficult to keep them updated or even in print unless they sell large numbers of copies — and backcountry skiing guidebooks in North America are not huge sellers. I did go against my best instincts and have another guidebook published in 2017 (see above, it did well though limited sales still precluded necessary updates. After years of experience in both digital and print, I remain convinced that the future of backcountry guidebooks is digital, presented with smartphone and computer apps.

Thus, my latest book is published digitally on Rackup, and I’ve actually been happy to let several of my books go out of print so I can then publish that same information on the web. Offered for free, perhaps supported by advertising.

For example, my “Dawson’s Guide to Colorado Backcountry Skiing” is out of print as of 2012, and ported to the web at BackcountrySkiingCO.com.
